Canberra Voted Least Popular

October 28, 2008

ONE in three people have voted Canberra the Australian city they would least like to holiday in, according to a new travel survey.

The totaltravel.com survey asked the question "Which Australian city would you least like to holiday in" and attracted 2526 votes.

Canberra - Australia's national capital, the seat of Federal Parliament and home to a host of national museums and galleries - attracted 33 per cent of the vote.

The second least popular city was Sydney (14 per cent), followed by Darwin and Adelaide in a tie for third place (13 per cent).

Rounding out the results were Brisbane and Melbourne (8 per cent), Hobart (6 per cent) and Perth (5 per cent), which proved to be the most popular place for a holiday.

totaltravel.com global marketing manager Paul Fisher said it was unfortunate that people couldn't see beyond Canberra's politicians and public servants.

"Canberra is a thriving, cosmopolitan city boasting national landmarks like parliament house, the Canberra war memorial, the national gallery and museum.

"It also has a lively cultural program hosting the famous Floriade festival, National Folk Festival, Rally of Canberra and the Royal Canberra show.

"A well-kept local secret is the vibrant Manuka district - which features some of Australia's best restaurants and night spots.

"Meanwhile, families can enjoy the national zoo, aquarium and national botanic gardens. The snowfields are also only a short drive away.

"People need to think outside the square and give cities like Canberra a chance."

Mr Fisher said it was interesting that the smaller, more remote cities like Hobart and Perth seemed to be the most popular holiday destinations.

"I think people are attracted to Perth and Hobart because a) they are stunning, and b) they have a very relaxed, stress-free atmosphere due to their smaller status."
